It's a big fun holiday in India today called Holi, the Festival of Colors. Hindus around the world go wild with color every spring during Holi, a time to herald the coming of spring. Friends and family lob buckets of dyed water and colorful powders, howbeit caustic and poisonous, at one another resulting in festive scenes of rainbowy chaos. It's all in good fun...mmm, I've heard that line before. The celebration occurs annually on the day following the full moon in the lunar month of Phalguna. On the first day of Holi, March 19, people will light bonfires to burn Holika, a mythical female demon. The fire signifies ridding the world of evil and ushering in the good. On day two, March 20, the dousing of color takes place.
Our loving families are no doubt happy that we've decided to stay on the safe grounds of the BMS guesthouse gated security to avoid being showered with powdered dyes and other mayhem. Before coming to India, I saw this holiday celebrated on The Idiot Abroad. (Poor Karl)
We've met some adventuresome guys here that are all about heading out today...saw a couple at breakfast this morning with bright red and pink skin. Dinner should be colorful.
